Holy Melauli Bhagwati Temple is located in Melauli Municipality of Baitadi District. This temple is not only a significant religious site for Baitadi but also one of the most renowned temples in Sudurpashchim province of Nepal. This Temple is situated approximately 33 kilometers southwest of Patan Municipality in Baitadi. It stands at an altitude of around 1,700 meters above sea level, surrounded by a vast Dubo (Bermuda grass) meadow. Interestingly, this is the only high-altitude Dubo-covered area in the entire district.
The
climate here remains temperate throughout the year, making it an ideal
place for devotees and travelers alike. The Sarmali-Pancheswar road also
passes through this temple premises, making it easily accessible.
The temple is built in an exquisite pagoda-style architecture, adorned with a beautifully crafted shikhara (spire). Over time, as different regimes rose and fell, the temple underwent multiple renovations.
The most
recent major reconstruction began in 1981 (B.S. 2038) and was completed in 1986
(B.S. 2043). During this period, King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev
played a crucial role in preserving the temple.
"During
the informal visit of His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Her
Majesty Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah to the Far-Western Development
Region in 1986 (B.S. 2043), the royal couple visited the newly renovated Melauli
Temple and offered prayers. The local people were overwhelmed with joy upon
having the opportunity to witness their beloved King and Queen. On this
occasion, His Majesty King Birendra generously donated NPR 100,000 for the
construction of the temple’s boundary wall, which was successfully completed
later."
Historical
records also indicate significant contributions from many prominent donors
toward the construction and upkeep of the temple.
Melauli Bhagwati is regarded as a powerful Shakti Peeth (sacred energy site). The main annual festival and grand fair are held on the 14th day (Chaturdashi) and the full moon day (Purnima) of the Kartik month (October-November).
A unique tradition observed during this festival is the sacrifice of approximately 200 to 500 large he-buffaloes and an equal number of he-goats, offered as sacred offerings to the deity. Thousands of devotees gather to seek blessings and witness this grand ritual.
After
performing the puja (worship) and rituals, we spent about 2 to 2.5
hours exploring the surrounding open meadows. The stunning views of
snow-covered mountain peaks, resembling islands amidst the hills, were
truly mesmerizing.
