Ghodaghodi Lake, located in Ghodaghodi Municipality of Kailali district, is a picturesque lake situated right beside the East-West Highway. This lake is regarded as one of Nepal's prominent sites from both a touristic and mythological perspective. The history of the lake is deeply intertwined with the Tharu community.
According to local folktales, the lake was
formed after a village inhabited by seven Tharu tribes was submerged
underwater. The shape of the lake is said to resemble a human hand. As per the
lore, this area was once a beautiful village. However, one fateful night,
incessant rainfall turned the village into a lake.
The folktale also narrates that a king,
after noticing the mysterious transformation, sent first a male horse and then
a female horse to explore the area. Unfortunately, neither of the horses
returned alive. Believing the place to be imbued with divine power, the king
ordered the construction of a temple in the area. The lake and temple were
subsequently named "Ghodaghodi" in memory of the two deceased horses.
Ghodaghodi Lake is located about 53
kilometres east of Dhangadhi Bazaar along the East-West Highway. The recently
developed infrastructure around the lake is expected to further enhance its
appeal to tourists in the future.
